Oprah Winfrey apologized for her involvement in perpetuating diet culture during a WeightWatchers livestream. “I want to acknowledge that I have been a steadfast participant in this diet culture through my platforms, through the magazine, through the talk show for 25 years,” she said. “I’ve been a major contributor to it. I cannot tell you how many weight loss shows and makeovers I have done and they have been a staple since I’ve been working in television.” Oprah even singled out an iconic moment from her talk show in 1988 when she rolled a wagon of fat onto the stage, calling it one of her “biggest regrets.”
She emphasized the importance of evolving and doing better, sharing her decision to step down from the WW board of directors. “I own what I’ve done, and now I want to do better,” Oprah added. Throughout her career, Winfrey has been open about her health journey, including weight loss experiences.
