Jello Biafra is in stable condition after a hemorrhagic stroke led to his hospitalization, according to an update shared after the medical emergency. The former Dead Kennedys frontman said the stroke was caused by high blood pressure and happened suddenly after he got out of bed.
In his account of the incident, Biafra said he quickly realized something was seriously wrong when he lost function on one side of his body. He was taken to the hospital, where doctors identified the stroke and began treatment. The update said he is now focused on recovery and rehabilitation.
A hemorrhagic stroke happens when a blood vessel in the brain leaks or bursts, creating pressure that can damage brain tissue. High blood pressure is one of the most common risk factors. Recovery can vary depending on the severity of the stroke and how quickly treatment begins.
Biafra remains one of the most recognizable figures to come out of American punk. For now, the focus is on his health as he begins the next stage of recovery.
